Market Demand for Events Coordinators
Posted on 07/03/2011 by admin“Event planning is a huge, lucrative market, ripe with opportunity, and it just continues to expand.” - Linda Kevich, founder and director of the International Institute of Weddings
If you’ve been considering a career in Events, there’s never been a better time to get started. While other industries are still recovering from the GFC, job listings for Events Organisers are increasing – with strong growth forecasted for 2011/12.
Events can also be a financially rewarding career for graduates, with an average annual salary of around $59,000 (MyCareer, Dec 2009).
Events coordinators can work in a wide range of exciting industries – only about a quarter of graduates end up working in the Events industry itself. There is currently high demand for people with Events skills in the hotel and resort industry, as well as in Not for Profit Organisations and government agencies.
But what is the best way to get into Events, and what are employers looking for?
Interestingly, only around 20% of Events job advertisements ask for a tertiary level qualification, and most of these are for senior management roles. In this field, the right attitude is far more valuable than a degree. According to LinkedIn, the top 5 qualities of a successful event manager are:
1. Flexibility
2. People Skills
3. Organisation
4. Passion
5. Time Management
In addition to this, employers are also seeking people with practical experience. Vital to your success in the job market will be your ability to provide a good reference. Thus it makes sense to study an Events course that also provides work experience as part of the curriculum.
Getting started
Martin College offers an intensive 45 week Events program – the Diploma of Venues and Events. This is a hands-on, practical program ensures that you get actual Events experience as part of the course.
The Diploma of Venues and Events is the perfect course to study if you’ve just finished school, or if you’re looking for an exciting new career.
